CHAPTER FIVE

DIAMOND PULLED INTO a parking space at the large, two-story mall and turned off the radio. The beat had been a nice diversion from the toxic thoughts pummeling her mind during the short drive. She closed the door and tilted her face slightly. The cool wind caressed her skin. When she had stepped outside the apartment, she had been tempted to run the 15 miles but discarded the idea after thinking of the time she had spent working on her hair and makeup.

Inhaling, she smiled. Full-bloods, Breeds, and humans intermingled at the mall where no one cared about anything other than her ability to pay for what she wanted. Spirits lifted, she moved with purpose to the fragrance store on the second level that stocked her favorite body cream. Moving toward the escalator the hairs on the back of her neck rose. Human or wolf? She didn't turn to see and forgot about it as she took another deep breath.

Chatter and the scent of excitement swirled around her. Fragrant aromas from vendors competed with a few restaurants strategically placed throughout the mall. The onslaught of music, the rustle, and bustle of bodies moving, the mingling of their scents and mixture of bright displays soothed her bruised ego.

Despite what she told her sisters, she had believed she would be accepted into the sorority because of who she was and what she could bring to the organization. It stung that they didn't agree.

Enough of that. She came to shop and take her mind off her disappointment.

The body perfume store called to her. Next, she would visit the lingerie store for a few bras and new panties, something she had been planning to do for weeks. Maybe she would check out a few of the newer shops, see the newest trends and fashions. She would take pictures for Jewel and Ruby. Both were much better at pulling ensembles together.

Leather strap from her purse on her shoulder, she stepped off the elevator and walked purposely toward the tantalizing aromas of the store. Before she reached the entrance, she picked up her favorite scent. Joy replaced sadness as she spied new product combinations and after grabbing a small basket, tossed one of each inside.

"I wondered how long it would take for you to come and check out those new items," a familiar salesperson said nearby.

Diamond smiled as she placed the hot pink and lavender bottle near her nose and inhaled. "You should've called me when it came in."

"Today's the first day I've been back to work since they came in two days ago. I put aside a small stash for you in the back just in case. But you've got a second sense about that stuff, no need to call you," she teased.

Pleased the salesperson remembered her, Diamond glanced at the name tag, Lauren, and vowed to write a note of thanks to the manager. "I'm all over this." She looked around. "Is this all of it? Do you have something different in the back?"

"No, that's everything.
